![]() ![]() Sergeant Jean Lamothe from the Ottawa Police Service took Hallie Cotnam on a tour of Hintonburg to talk about how the community has become a better place to live because of the cooperation between neighbours, the police and the city. The Ottawa River’s Hidden TreasuresĪlan Neal’s walk along the Ottawa River with Mark Brandt was also a voyage through history, a reminder of how the river and the growth of the capital have always been intertwined. Dawson, who used to be the head of the Geological Survey of Canada. Dawson, an urban planner during the days of the horse and carriage, had a hand in designing the capital. Hallie Cotnam took a ramble with Ottawa writer and historian, Phil Jenkins to trace the footsteps of Dr. Luciano Pradal guided Stu Mills along Preston Street and while it would have been tempting to spend the whole walk snacking on good food, Luciano delved much deeper into the stories of the street and the Italians who put the neighbourhood on Ottawa’s map. Hallie Cotnam discovered the hidden history of Clarkstown, with some help from Francis Beaulieu. Where’s Clarkstown, you ask? Hallie had to head to Vanier to find out the story behind this bit of Ottawa lore. But to Mike Young, the graffiti on that wall is more than just spray paint. They started out at the most famous graffiti wall in town, down by the old technical school, a wall that many commuters see on the ride to work. Jacobs believed that people should get to know their cities by walking, and that locals need to improve their ‘urban literacy’ by learning about their neighbourhoods.Įach ‘walk’ is lead by someone who knows the neighbourhood and who can share the story of that place. Sometimes the walk is about history and sometimes it is more about what’s happening there today. This year, these free walks are happening on May 7 and 8.
